(N.Z. Press Association-Copyright)
ADELAIDE. May 20.
When he was swept 700 ft along an underground water main, an Adelaide workman narrowly escaped death yesterday. He was dragged out suffering from severe head bruises and immersion, by two men who spotted his boots sticking out of the water at an excavaticn.
The man. Douglas Bennett, aged 28. was one of several workmen lining the pipeline with cement six feet below the ground. A broken main sent hundreds of thousands of gal* Uns of water flowing at terrific force into the ptpe-
line through openings made by the workmen. Mr Bennett, who was working about 30 feet from one of the openings, was caught in the torrent and swept along the pipeline.
While workmates were arranging to rescue him. two men drove up and told them they had just dragged a man unconscious from j* 'ja'-ec-filled excavation, 700 feet down the road. Their attention had been drawn to the hole by a pair Of rubber boots protruding from the water. Mr Bennett is tn hospital, but his condition is» satisfactory."
