GUIDE DOG FOR GIRL
"Arrival In Auckland (K2. Press Association > AUCKLAND. May 22. Delle, an 18-month-old yellow Labrador, strained eagerly at the leash as she left a Tasman Empire Airways Electra at Whcr.uapai this evening. Delle is the guide dog of a blind Auckland girl. Miss Jean Fraser, of Parnell, Idle first New Zealander to have a guide dog in this country. By the time she landed in Auckland, the dog was a veteran air traveller of three flights through Australia to New Zealand. She travelled in state on a foam-rubber mattress in a special secticn of the first-class compartment. “Delle was wonderful.’’ said Miss Betsy Jenkinson, the flight hostess. “She slept with one eye open for her mistress all the way.” Delle was her second guide dog. Miss Fraser said. Her first was mauled by a stray, and made too nervous for the work.
After eight weeks at the guide-dog training centre in Perth, she was only beginning to establish the vital trust between Delle and herself Miss Fraser said. There wou’d be a period of familiarisation in the area around her Parnell flat before she ventured into the city with Delle. Miss Fraser said she had learned to control Delle. to walk with her; avoid obstacles, and thread city traffic.
