ARRESTS IN KOREA
“Subversive Elements”

The South Korean Home Ministry today announced that 2014 Communists, Communist sympathisers and other “subversive elements'* were arrested last night. The arrested included 70 students, 546 teachers and professors, 606 political party members, and 14 journalists. The Home Ministry said the publisher of the newspaper “Minjok Ilbo* (Peoples Daily), Mr Yong Soo Cho. and four other members of the newspaper, were among those arrested. It said reports that Mr Cho had received political funds from pro-Communist Koreans in Japan were being investigated. The announcement said one editorial writer and two reporters from other publications were also being investigated for publishing "false reports" after the coup d'etat last Tuesday. It also said that during the previous regime of Dr. John Chang, subversive action had been planned by students who advocated negotiations between North and Sou'h Korea.
