MEMBERSHIP OF N.C.W.

Young People Urged To Join

“Really young people should be encouraged to join the National Council of Women as representatives of their groups,” said the presibranch (Mrs W. Grant) at the annual meeting last evening. Mrs Grant referred to a message sent to the branch by the Mayoress of Christchurch (Mrs G. Manning) who was unable to attend the meeting. Mrs Grant expressed the hope that old girls’ associations, church groups and other youth organisations would send representatives to the council, particularly young women who had recently left school.

“We want to hear their views, and what the young people want and don’t want,” she said.

She stressed the importance of delegates being really active in the council as it depended entirely on delegates from organisations for its effectiveness. The National Council of Women representative on the C.0.R.5.0. committee (Miss H. K. Lovell-Smith) reported that the latest figures for the C.0.R.5.0. house-to-house appeal exceeded any previously raised in Christchurch. She said there was an urgent need for more packers to assist in the Gloucester street depot: Mrs Grant who represents the National Council of Women on the Christchurch Consumer Association urged members to continue support of the Consumer Service as the Christchurch branch of the council had pressed for the service for many years. ■ She welcomed a past president of the New Plymouth branch of the council (Mrs A. E. Wiggins) and presidents of several Christchurch women’s organisations.

Members stood in silence as a tribute to Mrs R. W. Borland, who had represented the Home Economics Association on the council. Officers elected were: President. Mrs W. Grant; vicepresidents. Mrs E. P. Giddens, Miss S. Rolls; secretary. Miss S. Lilly; treasurer, Mrs L. I. Cattell; registrar, Mrs D. G. McFadden: committee. Dr. P. Savage, Mesdames J. Amos. G. J. Ashley, E. B. Dalmer, E. P. Giddens, Miss S. Rolls.
