The tragically sudden death in London of Mr John Moffett, the editor of the “Otago Daily Times," had deeply shocked the New Zealand community in Britain, while the news of this totally unexpected and sad happening would make unhappy reading for his many friends and journalistic colleagues in New Zealand, said Mr P. R Scoble, president of the New Zealand Newspaper Proprietors’ Association. who is at present in London. “Mr Moffett was a wellknown and highly-respected figure in the New Zealand newspaper world. He spent his lifetime in journalisn and was deeply attached to his * profession. "His interests spread beyond the daily editorship of the newspaper to which he had been attached for so long, to the wider spheres of national and international associations devoted to the maintenance of journalistic standards and the free distribution of news and information," Mr Scoble said. "His long experience and knowledge of the craft will be missed from New Zealand journalism. “To the New Zealand colleagues who were with him in London at the time of the sad occurrence. Mr Moffett appeared to be in good health and spirits, a circumstance which more profoundly shocked them -when confronted with the news of his passing. All newspaper people in New Zealand will extend their deepest sympathy to his widow, who had accompanied him to England and to his son and daughter in New Zealand,” Mr Scoble said.
