Man For Trial On Assault Charge
(N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, May 18. A married Stratford man. Basil Ray Cudman. aged 28. a driver, was charged in the Stratford Magistrate’s Court today with assault with intent to commit rape on April 21. Pleading not guilty, and reserving his defence, he was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Detective - Sergeant G. Hogan, who prosecuted, said the complainant, aged 21. was using the telephone in accused’s house when the lights went out, and she was attacked. She escaped to a neighbouring house. Evidence was given by the complainant, who said she screamed when the accused started to fight with her. He told her to be quiet as he had a gun in the house, she said.
