French Jets For R.A.A.F.
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CANBERRA, May 17. The Australian Government announced today that it would reject the British Avon jet engine in favour of the French Atar engine for the Royal Australian Air Force’s new Mirage fighters. The Minister for Air (Senator H. Wade) said the decision in favour of the French engine was recommended by the Air Board last week after detailed consideration of operational and technical assessments from Air Force experts, who had been in France assessing both engines since the beginning of the year. The Atar engine will be manufactured by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation at its Fisherman's Bend factory in Victoria.
