The Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nash) in a statement today advocated that Western countries, New Zealand included, should give unconditionally to underdeveloped eastern countries all foodstuffs that could not be economically sold. He said it would be the most constructive gesture of the decade if such a gift of food surpluses was made, for instance, to China. “We have a responsibility to help those countries where the people are condemned to a shorter life because of lack of food.” he said. The proper growth of a human being required 2500 to SOOO calories a day but mainland of China existed on an average calory consumption of 700. India was on 1800, he said. "I would like to see New Zealand tackle this problem There is mutual aid and the Colombo Plan but something else is needed.”
