CITIZENS AND RATEPAYERS
Women’s Branch Of Association
Two members of the women’s branch of the Christchurch Citizens’ and Ratepayers’ Association may be prepared to stand for election to the Christchurch City Council. This was suggested by Miss Mary McLean at the annual meeting of the branch, held yesterday. A letter will be sent from the branch to the association, congratulating it on refraining from contesting the contemplated city by-election, and so saving citizens unnecessary expense.
The president (Mrs E. R Rice) congratulated Miss McLean on receiving the M.B.E. award, and presented her with a spray of flowers. A new venture in the branch’s activities during the last year had been a visit to a large clothing factory, Mrs Rice said In her report. Similar visits were being arranged for this year, she said.
The branch is represented on the general committee of the Citizens’ and Ratepayers’ Association, and on the National Council of Women. Officers elected were: patrons. Mesdames W. S. MacGibibon, W. Mackay, A Schumacher, Miss M. McLean; president, Mrs E. R. Rice; vice-presidents, Mesdames H. E, Radley. A. Kennedy 'White; secretarytreasurer, Miss B. Morrison; committee. Mrs J. W. Sheridan, Miss A. Bell, (with power to add): life members. Mesdames L. Buckley. C. Merrin, E. Eliott, Miss M Enright. Vocal items were given by Mrs Valerie Ainsworth (Ashburton), and Mr Vernon Reid.
