MR McALPINE AT HAREWOOD

He had been interested in the development of the Christchurch Airport at Harewood since he first entered politics nearly 15 years ago, and his confidence in its future had been justified. No airport in New Zealand had a greater safety margin on its approaches than Harewood, and this had been a major advantage in its development, said the Minister in charge of Civil Aviation (Mr McAlpine) yesterday. The Minister was speaking at the official opening of a new service station at the airport. “Every week during my first three years in Parliament I asked a question on the development of Harewood—it got to the stage where it became a joke.” he said. “I am quite certain that by the pressure I put on the Labour Government I committed the National Government to the development of Harewood when it was elected in 1949.”
He had made a fairly intense study of the best sites for airports, and had always considered Harewood toe ideal place for Christchurch. “And I hope this service station has provided adequate facilities for super-grade kerosene for jets,’’ said Mr McAlpine.
