Kennedy Arrives In Ottawa

OTTAWA, May 17. • President Kennedy will address a joint session of the Canadian Parliament today as the highlight of his three-day visit to Canada. The President yesterday made a plea for support from Canada in building solidarity among American countries.
Yesterday, on the first day of his tour, the President in reply to the Governor-Gen-eral’s welcome, made a plea for support from Canada in building up solidarity among /merican countries. “The tide of foreign affairs flows swiftly in and out,” he said.
More than 20,000 welcomed the President and Mrs Kennedy to Ottawa. Canadian Press said. They crowded the airport and lined the route taken by the Presidential party. President Kennedy, as a gesture to Canada’s bilingual tradition, spoke one sentence in French on his arrival.
Last night the President and his wife dined on Arctic “char” —a rare fish dish—and roast lamb at a State dinner.
Carnations and ornate silverware—some on loan from Buckingham Palace deci ated the horseshoe table in the Government House bollr om for the welcoming banquet. Part of the “continental to-i,-thi-rness” Mr Kennedy sorght involved Canadian participation in economic ass'.. tance to the under-de-veloped nations of Latin America. Mr Kennedy would like to see Canada take even a small share of the assistance burden now shouldered almost exclusively by the U S., «aid United Press International.
It is thought that he also wants Canada to increase its economic aid to India. The visit ends tomorrow after breakfast. The President is due back in Washington by about 11 a.m.
