CHAIR FOR SHEPARD

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 8. “This symbolises a great event." said the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) tonight, when officially presenting a rocket-shaped chair to the Charge d'Affaires of the American Embassy (Miss Ruth Bacon).
Mr Holyoake. as co-patron of the New Zealand-Ameri-can Association, was handing over the gift to be sent to the successful American spaceman, Commander Alan Shepard.
“New Zealanders lived with you, trembled with you, and were ever-joyous with you in the great space flight,” said Mr Holyoake. The chair was built by Mr George Emms, of Gisborne. The lower half, representing the flame and smoke of the rocket propellant, is a red and white striped frill The gold lame cushion shows the golden orb of the earth and the blue back covering shows the colour of the cosmos Mr Emms decorated the back of the chair with the 50 stars of the United States and the seat of it with the Southern Cross to represent New Zealand.
