Caught lu Rear Bumper Bar

(N.Z. Press Association) GREYMOUTH, May 3. Russell McGuigan, the five-year-old son of Mr and Mrs I. J. McGuigan, of 96 Marsden road. Greymouth, suffered a fractured skull and other injuries, when he was dragged by a bus, from which he had alighted, while returning home from school shortly before 3 o’clock this afternoon. Onlookers say the child was holding on to the rear bumper bar on the bus. unknown to the driver. It is thought that his clothing or school bag pinned him to the bumper bar. The bus had travelled approximately 100 yards before the child was thrown clear. Mrs W. J. Seguin, of Marlborough street, was attracted by screams, but at first thought the child was crying inside the bus. Her son told her the child was being dragged along behind the bus. She rushed outside immediately, just as the boy was thrown clear as a result of the bus back firing or having changed gears. Mrs Seguin notified a doctor and the child's mother, and Miss Glenys McQuillan, a nurse aid, carried the boy into Mrs Seguin's home. A doctor ordered his immediate admission to hospital, where he underwent an operation. One of the principals of the bus company said the driver did not know the child had clung to the rear bumper, and was very surprised when he was Informed that a boy had been injured. The hospital authorities tonight reported the child’s condition as z satisfactory.
