OLD SWEDISH SHIP RAISED.—Sweden’s seventeenth-century warship Vasa (1400 tons) breaking the surface, lifted in a cradle of cables, in Stockholm harbour. The ship, which had been lying for 333 years in the harbour mud, capsized and sank in 1628, after leaving the Stockholm naval yard on her maiden voyage. She was first located 110ft below the surface in 1955. Salvage operations began in 1957. After being pumped dry, she will be towed to dry dock for restoration.
