Sir, —Either the Americans are the greatest hypocrites in the world, or they have no liaison, between the leaders and the generals. On the one hand the French General Challe is reported to have admitted N.A.T.O. support for his uprising, and on the other hand we read the letter from President Kennedy to President de Gaulle offering help if necessary. The whole thing is like a nightmare, but perhaps the Chinese are right when they say that the greatest enemy to peace in the world is United States imperialism.—Yours, etc., P J A May 1, 1961.

Sir, —If correct, the report from Paris that General Challe was offered military and financial support by senior American North Atlantic Treaty Organisation officers and that this fact was decisive in firing the rebellion. then United States pretentions fall beneath the level of trust of her allies. The President has evidently confided his officers words but not their plutocratic deeds. Tire several vital interests of our Commonwealth need adequate expression and weight in conference. Eichmann recently described the Nazi scramble to obtain forged records at the end of the war. The United States should now legally allow allies access to the Nazi files in the Documents Centre in Berlin, so clearing her own services and her rearming of West Germany with atomic missiles. The time also appears propitious for an exchange of visits between British and Chinese leaders resolving this unprofessional incubus on welfare negotiation.—Yours, etc., LUDICE. May 1. 1961.
