DEBUTANTE BALL

Villa Maria Old Girls

A variety of beautiful gowns made of satin, crystallines. laces, embroidered nylons, and brocades were worn by 24 debutantes presented at the Villa Maria Old Girls’ Association debutante ball last evening Many of the debutantes chose hand-made roses to feature on their frocks, while others accentuated the classic lines with lurex thread, pearls or diamantes.

Before their presentation at the Winter Garden, the debutantes made a special visit to the sisters and boarders at Villa Maria College.

They were presented by the president of the association (Miss C. M. IVe) to the Rt. Rev. Monsignor T. Hanrahan. They had been trained for the occasion by Mrs W. Wilson.

A special feature of the ball was a blue painted book with gold lettering, entitled “Debutante’s Diary.” The inside leaf, representing a page, had the school crest painted on it. Each partner opened this page for his waiting debutante to step out into the ballroom for her presentation. y ’

louring the evening, a demonstration of Exhibition dancing was given by Mrs N,. Rcxjerick and Mr B. Fox. Fink and white was the thetoe of the flowers which decorated the Winter Garden for the occasion, making a delicate foil for the debu-

tantes’ gowns. The theme was born out in tiny posies in. the alcoves, pedestal bowls round the ballroom, and in displays of nerines and chrystantheniums in the Sapphire room. The debutantes carried posies in the same colours, comprised qf sweetheart roses, carnations, and ivy leaves, which were a gift from the association. Miss ive wore a ClassicallyStyled gown of sunset red delustered satin shot with blue. It featured a bateau neckline falling into a deep V at the back, and a single rose on the back skirt which was caught at the middle to form a slight train. The vice-president of the association (Mrs P. J. Keenan) chose black tulle over moire taffeta. The gown had a ballet moulded bodice, and gold sequins embossed on a bouffant skirt.

The secretary of the association (Miss C. M. Connor) wore a gown of soft gold delustred satin, with a square neckline featuring an inset of white guipure lace. The skirt had a plain panel in the front and unpressed pleats. She teamed her dress with gold satin shoes. Debutantes
