Money To Control Nassella

An additional grant for control work in the Waipara area was urged by the chairman of the North Canterbury Nassella Tussock Board (Mr T G. Maxwell) in his report to the annual meeting yesterday. "The present Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine), while debating in the House last year, made an urgent appeal to the Minister of Agriculture that a sum of money unspent by his department. exceeding £lOO.OOO. be made available to the Nassella Tussock Board, as the matter was serious.

“This statement was noted with pleasure by the board and farmers, and we will be waiting with deep interest and gratitude his further appeal to the Treasury for help on our behalf, now that he is on the Government bench.

“Just as every few years we have a war to end wars, we have a credit squeeze to end inflation. Both events have two things in common. Neither quite achieves its object, and both cause serious disruption to the steady development of the country.

“The difference between prosperity and inflation is only the number of weeks that must elapse after a General Election until the successful political party can have its first meeting and decide what steps are urgently necessary to put the economy of the country back on a sound footing. It is hoped that the need to restrict the normal expansion of the country will not be applied to the efforts of the board in the coming year," Mr Maxwell said.
