Magistrotefs Court Braking Distance Graph Establishes Offence

A graph compiled by the Christchurch City Council’« traffic department and giving motorists’ reaction time and total braking distances for various speeds was put to use for the first time in a prosecution in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when a man was charged with driving without due eare and attention. The defendant, Robert Victor Whitley, was convicted on the charge by Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., and was fined £2. Chief Patrol Officer J. Brown, who prosecuted, said the case was the first of its kind to be heard in Christchurch. Traffic Officer • B. Watson said he had checked the speed of Whitley’s car by microwave detector in Worcester street, approaching the intersection of England street where a corner shop restricted the view. He approached the intersection at 32 miles an hour and could not have stopped within 59 feet if there had been a car coming from either direction. “A number of accidents at intersections are due to the speed of motorists approaching the intersection,” said Chief Patrol Officer Brown. "At 32 miles an hour a person cannot stop in the required distance before reaching the accident-prone area in that intersection.” OTHER TRAFFIC CASES On other traffic charges brought by the Christchurch City Council, offenders were dealt with as follows: Exceeding 30 miles an hour: Richard Gordon Norrell, £5 and licence suspended for three months; William Henry Eddy, £2; Colin James Antill, £5 and licence suspended for two months (no safety helmet.£2); Basil John Bazley, £5 (no warrant of fitness, £2); Ernest William Armstrong. £2; Joseph Bakes, £2; David John Banks, £5 and licence suspended for two months (no safety helmet, £2); William Bernard Barr, £2; Selwyn Norton Bassett, £2; Frances Ruth Bedwell, £2; Harry Benson, £2; Angus George Birrell, £2 (no warrant of fitness, £2); Colin William Francis Bowis, £2; Charles Neville Britt, £2; Athol Merton Brown, £4; Daniel Caimey, £2; John Graham Cardwell. £2; Margaret Caverhill, £2; Colin Chapman, £2; Robert Howard Clark, £2; Victor Rex Claude, £2; Gerald Herbert Richard Cleeve, £3; Richard Alan Crichton, £2; Anthony Adey, £2; Alan Noel Amer, £2; George Geoffrey Anderson. £2; Kenneth Gordon Annett, £3; Bruce Edward Curry, £2 (no safety helmet, £2); Adriaan Cornelius de Jong, £2 (no safety helmet, £2); Murray Walter Dennis, £5; Reginald Lance Diamond. £2; Edwin Newton Dodge, £4; Stephen Richard Elmsley, £2; Grace Foley, £3; Gerald Franklin, £2; Leonard Francis Gillespie, £2; Shirley Edwin Gimblett, costs only; Donald Hague, £4; Christopher Hammond, £2.
