Nurses’ Swimming Pool

Sir,—The action of the city council in refusing the hospital board additional land on which to build a swimming pool is understandable when it is realised that much of the beautiful woodland around the nurses’ home would have to be sacrificed. However, it is regrettable that our nurses, after devoting their time to helping the sick, should be denied an amenity. Most citizens would no doubt be happy to see some effort made to accommodate the nurses somewhere in Hagley Park which, after all, was set aside as the “lungs of the city.” Naturally such a site would need to be close to the nurses’ ■home and the area between Hospital corner and the cricket oval beyond the trees springs to mind. Could not the local bodies concerned explore the possibilities of this suggestion?— tours, etc.. SYMPATHISER March 18, 1961.
