SWIMMING £3500 PROGRAMME FOR TWO YEARS

Based on an "estimated £3500 being available during the next two seasons, a report setting out a proposed programme of expenditure has been prepared by the finance committee of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association to be circulated to centres. The report was approved at a meeting of the association s council last evening, and will be presented for adoption at the association’s next annual meeting. A tour of professional coaches to smaller centres during the winter is expected to account for £4OO, and the development of inter-centre swimming carnivals during the season of 1961-62 will cost a further £5OO. The committee envisages centres holding more inter-centre meetings if the cost could be guaranteed. The proposal is mainly to help large centres such as Auckland and Wellington to meet in a contest at a smaller centre. A training school for possible Empire Games nominees, beginning in September, 1962. is expected to cost £1250, says the report. Present plans are for the selection of up to 30 possible British Empire Games nominations to attend a training school for one month. At the end of this, a series of trials will result in final selection for submission to the Olympic and British Empire Games’ Association, when the final team has been selected, it is then proposed to bring this reduced group together. two weeks before it departs, for practice and training in a 55 yard pool. The accommodation and travel costs for the Empire Games at Perth are expected to be £lOOO. and a visit of Empii s Games competitors to New Zealand after the Games a further £4OO. It would be up to centres to approve this expenditure, but it seemed to cover all aspects of immediate development for the sport in this country, said the president (Mr A. J. Donaldson). Tours Report The association’s tours committee has written to other national sporting associations seeking a combined effort to secure a visit from some of the Commonwealth competitors at Perth. The committee chairman (Mr L. Donaldson) said aircraft would probably have to be chartered, and the burden would be less on individual associations if they combined. Until the financial position of the association was stabilised and the success or otherwise of the English swimmers’ tour was known, the committee felt it could not make any plans for other tours. A suggested grouping of centres to be visited by professional coaches during the coming winter was given by the chairman of the coaching committee (Mr C. A. Harrow). The groups were:—(l) Nelson, West Coast Ashburton. South Canterbury and Southland. (2) Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay, Wairarapa. (3) Bay of Plenty. (4) Taranaki. Wanganui, Manawatu. Mr Harrow said his committee had sent a circular to centres asking if £1 a head was considered a reasonable coaching

charge. A visit of two to three days in each centre was envisaged. The centres were also asked if they had a pool available for demonstration purposes in August-September, and if they would be willing to participate in such a tour. Fendalton Club Cups and trophies won during the season were presented by the patron, Mr P. R. Willberg, at the Fendalton Amateur Swimming Club’s championships.
