ADDINGTON MARKET Biggest Entry Of Fat Lambs For Many Years

lii spite of an abnormally large fat lamb yarding of more than 4500 head—considered by several stockmen and trade buyers to be the biggest for about 25 years—there was a buyer at auction for virtually every pen of lambs at Addington Market yesterday. The market was remarkably sound and reflected the improved freezing schedule rates. Fat sheep numbers were also bigger than usual. While younger wethers almost held to late rates, older sorts and plain types were hard to sell at prices fully 5s cheaper. Best ewes showed a further gain and average sorts were steady. A good entry of fat cattle met a weaker market for steers and heifers, with cows maintaining current values. Store cattle sold soundly, with young cattle in keen demand. FAT LAMBS

The entpr of 4535 fat lambs was the biggest yarding to be offered for many years and was more than double a normal yarding. With nearly five races in the overflow pens selling took until well after 1 p.m. to complete. In spite of the heavy offering it was a sound sale all round, and there was good competition, Quality varied markedly, and there were many lambs which were plain and unfinished. However. there was good grazier inquiry for the plain sorts and good competition from freezing buyers supported the market for the lighter and prime lambs. The lighter class of lamb generally appreciated Is to 2s a head. For medium-weight lambs the trade competed for the best and there was also some freezing buying in this range. Mediumweight lamb values reflected the schedule rise and were 2s to 3s a head dearer on the best pens with plainer sorts showing a smaller gain. Heavy-weight lambs showed little or no change, but were fully firm on the good rates which have ruled for some time. As a substitute for hogget this class of lamb is already at a premium. Shorn lambs sold remarkably well and top sales of fully prime sorts were as high as 60s Id. Top price was gained by Miss E. Banks (Prebbleton), who sold eight at 71s Id and 11 at 70s Id. Smith and Jones (Kowhiterangi) sold three at 68s Id and B. E. Ashton (Tinwald) sold a similar number at 66s Id. Sales at 65s Id were made by N. M. Curry (Robinson’s Bay). Humphries (Tai Tapu), 9 at 46s Id to 62s FAT SHEEP Fat sheep numbers were also bigger and the entry totalled 4028 head compared with 3288 last week. Quality was about the same, but there were more pens of top quality ewes forward. In spite of the heavy lamb entry the best of the young wethers sold remarkably well and values held almost up to last week’s good rates. Older wethers and plainer sorts, except for an odd pen, were difficult to sell, with a general easing of about 5s a head, and in cases more with very little competition. For ewes the market was fully firm on average quality lines, but the better type of sheep made a further gain as the sale progressed of up to 2s a head, and this was sustained practically until the end of the sale when there was a slight easing. The top wether sale was made by S. R. Orr (Mount Hutt) with 19 at 77s Id to 81s Id. Sales at 80s Id were made by S. G. Brown (Loburn), Glenmore Farm (Halswell) and V. W. Wright (Methven), who averaged 78s Id for a line of 59. F. W. Bishop (Rakaia) sold 16 at 78s Id to 79s Id. For ewes the top price of 40s Id was paid to E. P. Adams (Greendale) and R. W. Skurr (Sheffield) had a sale at 39s Id. L. E. Taylor (Oxford) sold 11 at 38s Id, T. H. Burgin (Swannanoa) sold 24 at 36s Id to 38s Id and a sale at 37s Id was made by Innes Bros. • Sheffield). With 37 at 36s Id, E. J. Grimsey (Oxford) averaged 34s for a line of 104. Values were:— Extra prime two-tooth wethers, 76s Id to 81s Id. Prime heavy young wethers, 68s Id to 75s Id. n FAT CATTLE The fat cattle entry totalled 441 head compared with 356 last week. Quality was generally good.

The market for steers opened well below last week’s rates and sales of all but the very best were not. easy to make. However, as the sale progressed there tended to be an improvement and over the latter half of the sale values were about firm on last week. Some heavy four and five-year-old steers met a very satisfactory sale at up to £64 17s 6d, but apart from these there were not many good heavy-weights forward. ‘ There was a good supply of mediumweights.

With a good supply of heifers most values were back by about 40s a head on last week when this class of cattle was scarce. Cows showed little or no change and there was some very good pens offered. Top price for steers was £64 17s 6d and at this figure Stringer Bros. (Amberley) sold one Shorthorn, and V. J. Armstrong (Stony Bay) sold two Aberdeen Angus cross. Mr Armstrong sold eight steers from £62 2s 6d upwards at an average of £63 7s 6d. L. R. Dalzell (Culverden) sold one at £55 7s 6d.

A Banks Peninsula vendor headed heifers sales with two at £46 7s 6d. J. T. Power (Flaxton) also had a sale at the figure with one, and J. M. Gibb and Son (Tatare) had a sale at £44 12s 6d. Valley View Trust (Omihi) sold the top-priced cow at £44 2s 6d and R. P. Buckenham (Dunsandel) received £43 17s 6d for two. J. M. Gibb and Son sold one at £4l 2s 6d.

Several good averages were recorded, among which was a big line of cattle from the estate Mrs W. Macfarlane (Lakes Station). Thirty-two steers sold up to £53 7s 6d at an average of £5l 5s 6d and 37 heifers made up to £43 12s 6d to average £4O 18s.
