CRICKET First Day’s Play In Final Round

With the competition well and truly decided, and with definite hints of winter in the air, there was very little interest in the final round of the senior cricket championship which began on Saturday. There was. however, a notable performance by P. T. Harman, of Old Collegians. He opened the innings against Sydenham and batted right through for 57 not out. B. Salt made 71 for Sydenham, M. E. Chapple 57 for Lancaster Park, and G. T. Dowling 54 for West Christ church-University. The most successful bowlers were C. R. Nicholson (Sydenham) w ho took six for 39 and B. A. Bolton (Old Boys) five for 34.

Scores:— East Christchurch-Shir-ley 109; Old Boys 185 for nine wickets. Sydenham; 187; Old Collegians. 137. | St. Albans 200; Riccarton 140 for nine wickets. Lancaster Park 168; West Christchurch-Vni-versity 146 for seven wickets. EAST-SHIRLEY V. H. 5.0.8. Batting first at Macfarlane Park, East Christchurch-Shirley was soon in trouble. On a rather green wicket, which [gave the bowlers some assistance, the first seven wickets fell for 53 runs. Only C. Hazeldine and M. Dalyrmple played the bowling with any confidence, their eighth wicket partnership being worth 33 runs. Hazeldine especially batted most forcefully. Although rather flattered by some inept batting, the Old Boys’ bowling was most • accurate. B. A. Bolton kept 'the ball up and turned quite ■ sharply on occasions. He was always in control. With a depleted attack, East Christchurch-Shirley was unable to contain the Old Boys’ opening pair, Bolton and Hill, who together put on 78 runs in even time. Some delightful batting was then seen from W. A. Hadlee, who added to his already impressive total for this season with a commanding 38. The brunt of the East bowling was borne by C. K. Smart, who bowled more than 37 overs. He and Hazeldine, whose low trajectory puzzled many batsmen, were responsible for keeping the Old Boys’ total within reasonable bounds. The umpires are Messrs S. Leeson and F. Goodall. Scores:— EAST-SHIRLEY First Innings J. W., Grocott, c West, b Hicks .. 9 J. D. Capstick, c W. A. Hadlee, b Hicks .. 11 D. N. Adams, st West, b Bolton .. .. 6 T. Salt, Sydenham gained a first innings lead over Old Collegians at Elmwood Park, and also took the bonus points. Old Collegians were all out just before stumps. The best bowling for Old Collegians was produced by J. H. M. Dawson, who had a fine opening spell which accounted for the first three wickets. He finished with four for 43. Rivalling this was the equally ■ fine spell by the Sydenham . opening bowler, left-arm C. R. Nicholson, who took six for 39. Working up real pace. Nicholson twuce took wickets with successive balls. Dawson accomplished this feat once in his spell. The Old Collegians opening batsman, P. T. Harman, showed real solidity in batting right

through his team’s innings to be not out 57. The umpires were H. C. Moore and R. Conway. Scores:— SYDENHAM First Innings I. Hartland, c Beadel, b Dawson .. .. 5 G. Beer, b Carpenter .. 22 K. Guillen when they are in form, and these were the two who set the pace in some extremely brisk batting by St. Albans. A score of 140 for six wickets at lunch is not often accomplished in the senior grade. After lunch J. Harris defended solidly while T. L. Jones made an all-out assault on J. W. Kiddey’s bowling. Jones took 27 in three overs from Kiddey, and indirectly must take credit for the two successive wides Kiddey bowled. Jones was in 27 minutes for his 31. A young left-hander, R. Jefferson, and a steadily improving right-hander, G. Barrett, gave Riccarton 64 for the first wicket, but this soon descended to 73 for five. By the close of play. Riccarton was badly placed, largely through some appalling calling. There were three run-outs, and it seemed that some difTernt form of communication—perhaps semaphore signalling—would improve the team’s performance. In the field, a newcomer. J. Mills, was splendid for St. Albans. The umpires are Messrs J Streeter and J. Owens. Scores:— ST ALBANS First Inninrs J. Ruston, lbw. b Motz .. 8 A W Parris, c McAulay, b Motz .. ..12 P G. Z. Dowker eave Lancaster Park the substance of its 168 against . West Christchurch - University. B. Hopkins again dismissed the top

batsmen. G. N. Gearry in the slips took an excellent catch to dismiss D. Woods. The innings of the day was played by G T. Dowling, who held the West ChristchurchUniversity batting together. He played many fluent strokes, and showed a refreshing willingness to hit the ball over the closeset field. However, six wickets fell for 99. with the Lancaster Park spinners observing their custom of pinning the batsmen —save Dowling—down firmly. Then Hopkins and E. R. Morris attacked the slow bowlers vigorously, scoring 46 in 29 minutes to put their side within range of Lancaster Park s total. Both made a succession of clean, hard hits, and broke the bowlers’ grip of the situation. A. Westwood did well to take the first two wickets. The umpires are Messrs T. H. Mathie and R. L. Moore.
