READ GOING TO AUCKLAND
i Ambition To Run Marathons (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. Mar. 19. N. R. Read, the 1956 Olympic walking gold medallist, may leave Taranaki for Auckland to run with top marathon runners there. He said this in New Plymouth on Saturday before setting off—and winning—the New Plymouth to Waitara road walk. Read will take up harrier running this winter as a first step towards his ambition to run a marathon. Although his plans are as yet uncertain, he is considering moving to Auckland to run with B. A. Magee and the other top Auckland distance men. Read completed the gruelling 11-mile road walk from New Plymouth to Waitara in Ihr 30m in 14.8 sec. winning the event in spite of a 23m in handicap.
