Halberg Laps Japanese For Win In 3000 Metres

TOKYO. March 18. M. Halberg, of New Zealand, today won the 3000 metres race at Japan's first international indoor athletic meeting In Tokyo. Halberg's time was Bmin 7sec Halberg, who won a gold medal in the 5000 metres al the Rome Olympics, lapped four Japanese who ran with him on the 133.33-metre course in the metropolitan gymnasium. He received a great ovation from the crowd as he completed his victory lap. Japanese sports commentators were impressed bj’ Halberg’s smooth, effortless style Z Okuzawa was second ir. Bmin 29 4sec and S Yokomizo third in Bmin 30.4 sec. L. Berruti. a gold medallist m the 200-metres last year a' Rome, today finished second in the 50-metres. He finished with an equal time of s.Bsec M. Kamata was first with Nishikawa third. D. Bragg, holder of the world record for the indoor pole vault, failed to break
his best jump of 481 metres He won the event with a jump of 4.7 metres but brought down the bar w’hen he attempted to clear 4.84 metres Bragg held the floor in the «\-mnasium as the remaining Japanese. N. Yasuda, failed to get beyond 4 3 metres. Another foreign athlete.
