ATHLETICS University And InterClub Meeting

The former Canterbury six-mile record holder. C. F. Reece, raced over a distance of nearly 11‘ miles in the I first one hour running event held in Canterbury when a number of inter-club events ! were decided in conjunction with the Canterbury University Athletic Club's championships at Rugby Park on : Saturday. It was possible the event was also the first of its type held in New Zealand. said one of the organ- ' isers after the race. The exact distance run by Reece was 11 miles 678 yards two feet, which was nearly 305 yards ahead of the seci ond man. the Canterbury • marathon champion. G. Wili son. whose distance was 11 miles 374 yards. Sponsored by the Canterbury Road Runners’ Association. the ! event attracted 20 entrants. 16 of whom completed the full hour of running. The event had its problems for the organisers, who had to keep a tally of the . quarter-mile circuits com- : Dieted bv each of the runners and there also had to ; be an attendant for each : competitor, so that each ath- ' lete's position could be ac- ' curately marked at the end ■ of the hour. Mile Record After missing a good part of the season with a leg injury. J. D. Macdonald made a good comeback to take the University mile title on the Friday evening with 4min 16.3 sec, which beat the previous record of 4min 18sec. made by his twin brother. , John, four years ago. The . field of 16 was one of the largest for this race for many: years. ! Although the University j has had some notable sprintl ers. in the intervening years Ithe 100 yards and 220 yards i records of R. Opie have survived since 1909, when he set times of lOsec and 22sec. Last year’s junior national 220 yards champion. A. Steel, twice equalled Opie's 100 yards time, winning the final by a yard from D. McKenI zie, w’ho last week narrowly beat Steel for second place in the national senior 220 vards chamoionship. Earlier in the day Steel and McKenzie had equalled the record in their heats. Because of the following wind, however. I they will not go on the books j as charing the record. All four individual events in the women’s section were won by Miss A. MacDonald who retained her titles in the 75 yards. 100 yards. 80 metres hurdles, and long jump. Abbreviations used in the University championships are: Science (S). Commerce (C), Law (L.).
