Hawarden Show Draws Record Entries

There was a record entry in the Hawarden Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show on Saturday. The total was 2461 as compared with 2173 last year, an increase of 288. There was a marked increase in the number of exhibits in the horse and sheep sections. The weather was fine and sunny in the morning with a slight breeze but shortly after 1 p.m. it clouded over and became colder. Light rain began about 2 p.m. and there were one or two scattered showers during the afternoon.

Gate takings were £9B. a slight drop on last year's figure of £lO7. However, the attendance was a good one. Parking space around the large ring was taxed to the limit and cars were parked six and seven deep in places. The grand parade was led by the president, Mr J. J. O'Carroll, the vice-presi-dents, Messrs J. F. Coop and J. H. Lawrence, and the member of Parliament for the district. Mr W. H. Gillespie. The Christchurch Ladies' Highland Pipe Band took' part in the parade and played items throughout the day. Before the parade the wife of the president, Mrs O’Carroll. presented the championship ribbons won in the horse section. The 1960 record sheep entry of 522 was exceeded this year by 173. The champion Corriedale ewe. owned by Mr H. C. Sidey, is a distant descendant of a ram given to Mr Sidey in 1924 by the late Mr H. Little. It is the twin daughter of a ewe which has won seven championships. During the year a new women's toilet block was erected by voluntary labour. The guessing of the weight of the fleece competition was won by Mr Peter Carr, of Waikari, with the exact weight of 36Jlb. Entries in the various classes were as follows, with last year's totals given in parenthesis: horses, 695 <522>: sheep. 519 < 488 >: wool. 28 <34>: dogs. 33 (31); poultry. 3 <107; grain, 29 (19); field classes, 3 (5); roots, 3: house and dairy produce, 122 (73); junior cooking. 24 (44); fancy work. 70 (78); school work. 398 (395); cut flowers. 210 (152); cut flowers, decorative fruit and vegetables, 442 (350); photography and art, 92 (124). The champion ram was a fine headed open-faced sheep, carrying a robust fleece of good handling wool and standing over a lot of ground, said the judge of the Corriedale rams. Mr A. M. Saunders, of Ashburton. The winning ram hogget showed great promise with much personality. Much could be heard of this animal in the future. Hoggets, in the main, were showing the effects of the prolonged spell of wet weather. The standard was very good, said the judge of the farmers' breeding ewes, Mr W. N. Maxwell, of Cheviot, hogget classes were rather hard to judge and seasonal factors had effected some sheep. The Young- Farmers’ Club deserved great credit for its selection of entries and for the way it matched the sheep up. There was very good quality in the class for a pen of five ewes, four tooth or over, and in the class for a pair of ewes, four-tooth or over. The old rams were not up to standard but all other entries could hold their own at any show, especially the champion and reserve champion ewes and all ewe lambs, said the judge of the South Suffolks, Mr D. J. Stewart, of Rakaia. High Standard Entries in the fat lamb classes were of a high standard, said the judge. Mr J. E. Rountree, of Upper Riccarton. There was an outstandI ing selection of sheep in the

class for a pair of half-bred or Corriedale lambs. 751 b live weight or over. The wether entries were also very good. The Hampshire Downs classes were not very well supported and entries were received from only two exhibitors. said the judge. Mr G. H. Burrows, of Geraldine. The standard was good. The champion ewe and ram. exhibited by A. B. and J W. Duncan, would hold their own at any show. The standard was average and some of the entries could have been a little stronger in the head but most were quite fair in the wool, said the judge of the Border Leicesters. Mr J. D. Paterson, of Darfield. The winning ewe lamb was an outstanding animal. The Romney entries were very good representatives of their breed and in several cases there were only minor points’beteween the winning sheep, said the judge. Mr F. Mr Chittock. who also judged Although entries were not numerous the class as a whole was very good, said Mr Chittock. who alsa judged the English Leicesters. The judge of the wool classes. Mr W. M. Bullen, of Christchurch, said the standard of entries was excellent as was the preparation, especially considering the adverse season. The two entries of pelts were both well got up. The top ponies in most classes were excellent, and would be a credit to any show in New Zealand, said the judge of nonies. group B. Mr A. C. Wright. Dunsandel. The two classes for best mannered and paced ponies were exceptionally good and were very hard to separate. More attention wanted to be paid to manners, said the judge of the hacks. Mr I. M. Ritchie, of Ashburton. Veteran competitors did not “put a foot wrong.” A horse in a show ring should he thoroughly schooled and onlv the polished horses deserved a prize. The ladies’ hacks were poor but the noise from the side shows and traction engine had some effect However. the general standard was quite good. The judge of the small ponies, group A. Mr J. W Dawson, of Darfield. said in his opinion the standard was excellent and they were the best ponies he had seen at a Hawarden show. They were fullv up to metropolitan show standard. The under 12 riding class was exceptionally good. CHAMPIONSHIPS Championships were awarded as follows: — Sheep.—Hampshire DownRam: A. B. and J. W. Duncan and reserve: ewe. A. B and J. W.
