Moy Beats The Milers

Moy and her most solidly-backed rival, Vitamise, battled It out for Hutt Handicap honours at Trentham on Saturday. Vitamise was a slightly stronger finisher, and cut into Moy’s lead with every stride near the end, but the Hastings filly won by half a length. Thompson Handicap form proved of full value. Moy was fourth and Vitamise third in the corresponding race on the first day of the meeting. Vitamise drifted to the tail of the field inside the first furlong and Moy was not far ahead of him half-way through the race. Gay Defoe and Plain Fox had turns at pacemaking from the six furlongs to the home turn, and Our Sal and Our Jan were closest to them on straightening up. By then Moy wast fast making ground four or five places pack, and she spurted brilliantly to lead into the last furlong. Only Vitamise could make a race of it with Moy after that. The Riccarton gelding did very well to run the winner so close. Sheonat. a little-fancied runner. was two lengths back third and a length and a quarter ahead of Fairassan. which was ridden back in the middle of the field. Salt Spray improved a few places from the ruck for fifth ahead of the tiring Gay Defoe. Braganza struck trouble when well placed early in the race. He was put out of stride and off-balance, and drifted back to the tail of the field. He was second to last at the end. Surprise Win Carnbane, a five-year-old brother of the Riccartontrained Timna, won the Rimu Hieh-weight Handicap at good odds. He led from outside the furlong and won by a length from Russett. which beat Diavolo by a nose. First-day highweight form was of iittle value. Cambane ran against the hack stayers on the first day, and finished fifth R A Jenkins had him well placed close to the* lead from the start on Saturday. He followed Conata. Big Blow, and Parasol into the straight, and responded well to get to the front soon after. Russett was in a trailing posi-

tion almost from the start and just lasted for second from Diavolo, which came from the middle of the field. Weradon, the extreme outsider of the field of 15. led the others in. He was just ahead of Negro and Parasol. The win favourite. Golden Defaulter, was a well-beaten eighth. He made ground from second to last in the straight, but had a vain chase after the leaders from outside the furlong. Floretta tired to thirteenth after having every chance. Count Lin was ninth. Elusive Pimpernel took over the pacemaking soon after the start, but ducked off the track towards the gate on the crossing just after passing the mile. Little To Spare Ups and Downs became the second successful favourite for the meeting when she nosed out Cavalier in the last few strides of the Pacific Handicap. Ups and Downs earned her victory after a second to Cabriere on the first day of the meeting. Lucky Me set a blistering pace to the straight, and she had most of the others struggling vainly to keep up before the home turn. But Ups and Downs responded gamely for W. T. Day inside the last furlong when sent after Cavalier. Cavalier came to the front from a trailing position when Lucky Me shortened stride going to the furlong. Cavalier appeared to have the race safely won for a moment, and was not disgraced in going under to such a game filly. Trawlerman. third to last early, made ground strongly in the straight for third two lengths back. He is not a precocious youngster, and he might not develop his best form until he is a three-year-old. Trawlerman cut the tiring Fire Gold out of third, close to home. Fire Gold followed Cavalier into the straight, but tired going to the furlong. Lucky Me was a weakening fifth, just ahead of the Riccarton filly. Gay Ribbon. Gay Ribbon passed some tired rivals in the straight, but was never in a contending position. Double For Meeting Navarro completed a good double for the meeting by winning the £lOOO Champion Hack Handicap for his Canterbury owners, Mr and Mrs E. Rutherford. The Riccarton-trained Sabaean gelding became awkwardly placed back near the stragglers between the half mile and the three furlongs. Rather than go round a

packed field N. Eastwood waited for a rails run.

Navarro took gaps brilliantly, got the run through on the inside of Last Link, which had done all the pacemaking, and out-finished Wild Duck and Flagon. This was Navarro’s third sucsive win. and his fourth altogether. Wild Duck. fourth in the corresponding race on the first day of the meeting, beat Flagon by half a length for second. They were never far from the lead, and came to the front with likely runs just ahead of Navarro in the straight. Bright Summer was a fair fourth a length behind Flagon, and Fairoaks carried top weight of 9-0 into fifth position Last Link tired to seventh Super Glen, the third choice for a win. was a distant eleventh. Favourite Wins Astrid, a unlucky second on the first day of the meeting, improved a brilliant record for Mr and Mrs L. G. Moleta by winning the Eastbourne Handicap. She was a firm favourite and paid £2 12s for a win. V. R. Coley had Astrid close to the pace from the start. The Fair’s Fair filly was brilliant enough to hold her position, and had the courage and stamina to cope with a challenge from Rio Rapido in the last furlong. She beat the Christchurchowned War Game gelding soundly by half a length, but there was merit in the effort of the runner-up, which was close to the tail of the field at the half mile. Llanos was third in a small gap. but his placing was creditable after a slow start. Flaxman tried to lead for the last five furlongs, but was pegged back to fifth. Tidal Wave came from last on the home turn for sixth. My Fair Lady and Ron, two more Riccarton representatives, were eighth and ninth respectively.
