CONGESTED PORT

24 Ships Now In Lyttelton

Fourteen of the 24 ships in the Lyttelton Harbour limits last evening were overseas vessels. Two of the remaining vessels were intercolonial traders, one of which, the Komata, was anchored in the stream. Four overseas ships are at anchor off the heads. They are the Shaw Savill ships Corinthic and Icenic, the latter is on her maiden voyage, the Swedish motor ship, Narrandera and the Port Lines Port Quebec. Three coastal vessels arriving today may have to anchor. They are the Poranui, Tainui and Tawanui. Projected sailings do not give any great hope for an improvement in berthage but one overseas vessel, the Port Launceston, may sail this evening, but her departure will make little appreciable difference as the congestion is complicated by an acute labour shortage.
