JET BOAT BURNED
Fire After Explosion (N.Z Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. Mar. 19. The world’s first passenger jet boat, the Rangimarie, which has operated for the tourist trade on the Wanganui river since 1958. was destroyed by fire at the weekend. The owner, Mr C. E. S. Davies, and Mr Pitau Tiko were working on the boat when Mr Davies lit a match to light a cigarette. There was an explosion and in a few seconds the boat was on fire from end to end. The two men cast it adrift and it floated out on the river where it sank in six feet of water. Mr Davies thinks there must have been a leak in one of the fuel tanks. The boat had not been used for two fays and he thinks gas from accumulated petrol in the bilge was ignited by his •natch.
