FEDERAL ECONOMY
No-confidence Motion Today
(ft.ZP.A.-Knter—Copyright) CANBERRA. March 8. The Leader of the Federal Opposition (Mr A. A. Calwelli today announced he would move a motion of noconfidence in the Government tomorrow over its economic policy. Speaking in the House of Representatives, Mr Calwell said he would move the motion because the Government’s rapidly-changing plans had failed to ’’develop and protect the Australian economy.” Mr Calwell said he would also move that the recommendations of the joint committee of constitutional review, which reported to Parliament in 1958 and 1959, be submitted to the people for approval.
As Mr Calwell was reading his notice of motion, the Treasurer (Mr H. E. Holt) interrupted and called loudly: “You have the same old plan —socialism." Mr Calwell’s motion said the Government’s policies had failed to safeguard Australia’s overseas funds and had caused “grave confusion, dislocation and hardship,” particularly to those who had lost their employment.
