A man tried to enter the Eastern Cafe, 167 Gloucester street, soon after 10 p.m. yesterday.
The sound of breaking glass alerted the proprietor, Mr W Wong and his wife.
Mr Wong rushed downstairs and saw* a glass panel in the shop door shattered and a hand fumbling with the lock inside. The intruder made off east along Gloucester street, said Mr Wong. Police, helped by the dog. Ace. patrolled nearby streets. Detectives took pieces of the broken glass for fingerprint tests.
