INTERMEDIATE SCHOOLS

Mr Tennent Will Not Interfere

The Minister of Education (Mr Tennent) has no intention of entering into any controversy about intermediate schools. “They are now a well-established part of the education system and doing a good job,” he said in Christchurch yesterday. "An inquiry was made at the direction of Mr Alfie, when he was Minister, and I don't intend to interfere with the present system—subject, always, of course, to the recommendation* of the Commission on Education which is now sitting,” said Mr Tennent.

The Minister had been asked for his views because there have been reports recently that objectors may attempt to have Mr Tennent reverse Mr Skoglund’s decision that an intermediate school be built in Fendalton. This suggestion now appears to have been abandoned; but both the Fendalton and Burnside Primary School Parentteacher Associations have this week protested about the report that tiie new intermediate school may have to open at the beginning of next year without manual training amenities. The Fendalton P.T-A. has asked that the opening of the school be delayed until all facilities are ready. The Bumside P.T.A. has asked that the school not be opened until it is complete, suggesting that the opening be delayed or extra contracts be let to accelerate completion in time for next year. It Is probable that the primary school committees will send these recommendations to the Canterbury Education Board.

Hit-and-Run Accident—The motor accident branch of the Christchurch Police is seeking witnesses to an accident which occurred outside the Christchurch railway station in Moorhouse avenue about 8.48 pm. yesterday, in which a cyclist was struck by a car which failed to stop after the accident The cyclist, John Lloyd Mayhew, of 35 Hollyford avenue, was taken to the Christchurch Hospital with leg injuries.
