WELLINGTON ART COMPETITIONS
Third Success To D. J. Ramage
The prizewinner of the graphic art competition, one of six art and design competitions ?J7?,” ged by the Festival of Wellington arts committee, was announced yesterday. He is Mr D. J. Ramage, of Wellington, who was awarded first prize of £lOO. This was Mr Ramage’s third success in the series of competitions as he has already won the first prize in the carpet design competition and printed lightweight wool fabric design competition. The second prize of £5O was won by Juliet Peter, of Wellington. Sponsored by the Wellington Harbour Board the subject of the competition was “Wellington Port.” Its object was to focus attention on the economic and social influence of the harbour on the city’s life. The judges, Messrs J. B. Coe, B. E. Keiller and E. M. Taylor, were unanimous in their selection of the prizewinners. Mr Ramage’s entry was a ziho plate lithograph of cranes framed against the sky. The judges said it shpwed a full appreciation of the medium without sacrificing integrity and conveyed the essence of Wellington’s mechanised waterfront. Juliet Peter’s entry, also a zinc plate lithograph, was considered by the judges to be a factual piece of draughtsmanship, well expressed in the medium. All the entries in the competition will be exhibited during the Festival.
