A Citizens Tax?
Sir, —Having just paid tie city £26 rates for as yet unsewered property four miles from the square I am in full agreement with ‘‘Ratepayer’s” letter in your issue on Saturday. A citizens tax should have the support of every’ home owner in New Zealand as we have been carrying the rest for too long. State house tenants have been particularly fortunate in this way as their rentals are not sufficient to cover the State’s initial investment, let alone leave sufficient to make a just contribution towards the amenities the ratepayers provide . and we all enjoy. I, for one, hope the municipal authorities will press their claim and have an act passed equalising the burden of what at the present time cannot be described as other than top-heavy.—Yours, etc., TAXPAYER. .
