DACHSHUND AS PET

Gift For Men In Antarctic

American Navy men wintering on Ross Island, McMurdo Sound, will have an eight-month-old dachshund pup to look after.

Last evening with a supply of vitamin tablets and two bags of dog biscuits given by a Christchurch flourmill, the dog flew the 2400 miles to the Antarctic base on board the Navy’s Super Constellation. The crew of the aircraft intended to feed the dog a steak for supper to sustain it on the long journey. Given to the Navy by a Christchurch man, Mr F. J. C. Dann, the pup will make its home with the Americans. “It is quite a friendly dog; in fact a regular pet,” said Mr Dann yesterday. Last year American men in the Antarctic gave £5O to boys at the Stanmore road welfare home, to purchase a boat for use by the boys at their annual camp at Purau. A rowing and sailing clinker was bought and it was in recognition of this gift that Mr Dann gave the dachshund to the Americans.
