EARS TO THE GROUND ON PANCAKE DAY —When the “pancake bell’’ of St. George’s Church, Toddington, Bedfordshire, was rung on Shrove Tuesday, children on Conger Hill neat by followed an old custom. They are shown putting their ears to the ground to listen for the sound of frying pancakes, made, according to legend, by a witch in the centre of the hill.
