LUMUMBA’S DEATH
Account Given By Nkrumah
ACCRA, February 19 President Nkrumah, of Ghana, said today he had received information that Patrice Lumumba was shot dead by a Belgian officer more than a month ago as he knelt in prayer.
The President told a public meeting last night that Mr Lumumba and his two lieutenants were ordered out of their Katanga prison on January 18 and told to pray. As they knelt, a Belgian officer gave an African soldier the order to shoot them.
The two lieutenants were executed, but the soldier lowered his rifle when it was Mr Lumumba’s turn, and refused to fire. The Belgian officer then drew his revolver and shot Mr Lumumba dead. Dr Nkrumah said.
