HEALTH OF LAMBS
Deterioration Noted
Reports that lambs are not doing so well now are not unexpected. An abundant rainfall, a lot of soft growth and a lack of sunshine to harden off the feed are conditions that are likely to lead to trouble. A feature of the season has been that lambs have on the whole done so well, but according to a report from MidCanterbury there has been a noticeable deterioration in lamb health over the last six weeks. Good responses to selenium treatment indicate that this useful trace element again has some part in the picture, but there has also been a pattern of parasitic infection and in some cases preoccupation with harvesting has resulted in lambs not getting access to sufficient feed.
In North Canterbury the season has lately been a bad one from a parasitic point of view with conditions being ideal tor mass hatchings of parasites and rapid infestations.
