Canterbury sent some of its best younger water polo players to Wellington last week-end with the representative team, and they acquitted themselves well. B. Monk, in the match against Wellington A, scored a particularly fine goal when he took the ball on his own side of half-way. swam down to the goalmouth, and netted a flick shot.

There is a distinct lack of wicket-keeper batsmen in the Plunket Shield teams this season, and for that reason J. England, of Old Collegians, must be given an outside chance of winning a place in the New Zealand team to tour South Africa. A competent 'keeper. England is averaging 26.5 in the senior competition, and showed some useful form for the Canterbury B team and the, New Zealand Colts side which played the M.C.C. at Ashburton.

Canterbury’s third-ranked woman tennis player, Mrs P. Leopold, of Avonside, has shifted to Ashburton, where her husband has been transferred. She is expected to travel to Christchurch to play in the senior club competition for the rest of the season and alsp to play in representative matches. She is in the team to play Hutt Valley today. Mrs Leopold, formerly Miss P. Allen, has been one , of the most consistent players in Canterbury club, tournament and representative matches for several years.

The present Canterbury table tennis champion. J. Armstrong, appears certain to win further titles this coming season. Last Monday, he played his first match for the Eagles' team in the summer first grade competition, and showed very good form. Last season Armstrong was ranked sixth in the Dominion, and must have gone close to selection for the New Zealand team to attend the world championships in Peking in April.

The consistent East Christchurch opening batsman, J. W. Grocott. heads the batting aggregates in the senior cricket championship. He has scored 359 runs, 37 more than the Lancaster* Park left-hander, A. Harrison. Grocott has made four half-centuries this season, and thoroughly earned his place in the Canterbury B team which went on a northern tour during the holiday period. '■
