M.C.C. In Good Position Against Combined Side

(New Zealand Press Association)

PALMERSTON NORTH, February 10.

Manawatu-Wairarapr was not in a happy position at the end of the first day’s play against the M.C.C. today. It had lost seven wickets for 140 runs in reply to the M.C.C.’s first innings total of 286 for nine declared. For the spectators, however, it was a day of entertaining cricket, played in 'deal weather. The wicket was true and fast.

The M.C.C. won the toss. Prideaux and Russell opened, and pushed the scoring from the first ball. Manawatu, however, had the initiative after the first quarter of an hour when it took Russell’s wicket. Russell was baffled by a ball that came back on him too quickly, and he was bowled by Rix for 10. The 50 came up in 39 minutes, but a change of bowlers, when the spinner, B. Yuile, came on, put a brake k>n the batsmen. Prides ux and Padgett were together at that stage, and both were giving a display of power stroking that delighted the crowd. Their second-wicket partnership was worth 105 runs.

Shortly before lunch, the game took an unexpected turn when, in one over, two wickets fell Prideaux was caught by Hemi when he tried to drive a ball from Harford, and Barber was run out two balls later without scoring. At lunch three wickets were down for 139 runs. Manawatu made -another break through about half an hour after lunch when it took the wickets of Padgett, Parks, apd Silk within a few minutes of each other. Padgett was in great form, and scored the best total of the day with a hard-hitting 78 before he snicked a ball from the Wairarapa medium-pace bowler. Neelv. and was caught by the wicket-keeper. Colquhoun. The best partnership in Manawatu’s innings was between T-ircy and Macleod Percy hit two sixes in succession. and throughout hit

powerfully, but with 50 on the board he was bowled by Latter. Harford and Xelly failed to score, and Allen had McLeod caught in slips after a steady innings that added 39 runs. Wilson was the most successful bowler, with three wickets for 13 runs in 11 overs. Scores:— M.C.C. First Innings R. M. Prideaux, c Hemi, b Harford .. ..58 W E. Russell, b Rix .. 10 D E. V.
