S.E.A.T.O. SPLIT
Talks Soon On Unity
(N.Z Press Assn.—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) NEW YORK, Feb. 9. The Foreign Ministers of the South-east Asia Treaty Organisation would have a chance next month to heal a split within the eight-nation alliance over the Laotian crisis, American Associated Press reported today from Bangkok. S.E.A.T.O. authorities said today they expected a firm show of unity at the annual conference of Ministers in Bangkok in March would pull S.E.A.T.O. together again. Australia and New Zealand are members of the eightnation alliance.
Diplomatic sources acknowledged that widely-differing opinions between Asian and Western members on the best approach to a settlement of the war in Laos had shaken the alliance somewhat.
But they said S.E.A.T.O is not near collapse, in spite of criticism expressed by Thailand and the Philippines.
