Average Figure Rises (N.Z.P.A - Re ute r—Copy right) LONDON. January 27 The British working man now earns an average £l4 10s 8d for a 48-houry week, the Ministry of Labour announced last night. This is the highest the average wage has ever been. Provisional figures based on the pay packets of 7.000,000 manual workers over the age of 21 show that over 12 months, average earnings went up by almost £1 a week. The figure of £l4 10s 8d for the average pay packet includes overtime and does not take tax deductions into account. It was based on a survey taken in the second week of October. For a woman, the average wage is. now £7 8s 4d a week Less welcome news is that between December and January, the number of unemployed rose by 53,044. This included 16,749 workers, mostly in the motor industry, who were temporarily out of work. The total unemployed was 418.005.
