Fire Destroys Stores

Seven stores and an empty factory were destroyed in a fire which burned for 12 hours in the heart of the busy area of Carbondale, eight miles from Scranton, Pennsylvania, last night. The flames wrecked a grocery store, a jewellery store, a record shop, a bakery shop. * restaurant, a women's cloth-
ing store and a television store. A wooden house and an empty factory building were also destroyed. Thirty-four persons living in apartments over the stores were forced into the street in temperatures of 14deg Fahrenheit below zero as their homes went up in flames. Firemen fought the fire for 12 hours but when the blaze was brought under control only the charred frames remained of the nine buildings.
