Report On Oat Crop
Farmers were making a better job of harvesting their oats this season, a man in the oat trade said last week There was not the quantity of straws and other foreign matter in the samples, he said.
Another man in the trade said that this was probably due to climatic conditions. In some seasons, he said, it was almost impossible for a header harvester operator to keep foreign matter out of the sample. Both men agreed that the oats themselves were of good quality, and one said that Winter Greys, Duns, Algerians and Gartons were all of better quality than for the last two or three seasons. He also said that they were yielding better The demand for oats from the North Island is, however, reported to be sluggish. It is understood that the North Island is in no urgent need of supplies. As with wheat and other crops harvesting of barley has been held up in the past week but early reports on the new crop indicate the quality seems to be “pretty good.”
