S.L TRIALS

Request For Juniors Before agreeing to adopt the South Island Trial Championships as a regular feature in the calendar of New Zealand swimming. the council of the New Zealand Amateur Shimming Association ’ last evening decided to ask the Canterbury Centre, which organised the meeting, to investigate the possibility of having juniors competing as well as seniors. The trial championships had been held at the Centennial Pool on December 10 said the carnival secretary (Mr J. H. Johnston) in his official written report Entries had bean received from every South Island centre with the exception of Otago, which had its own championships on the same night Such a carnival gave competitors from the smaller centres, without adequate facilities, a chance to compete in a 55yd pool against stronger opposition. It also gave swimmers a strenuous workout about a month before provincial championships, and it provided an adequate trial for South Island swimmers before a national selector. Mr C. A. Harrow, a member of the Canterbury centre, said that it had been the original intention to have both seniors and juniors competing. However. the other centres had said that they could not send a team of juniors as well as seniors to the carnival. Australians’ Visit A request by the Auckland Centre tor the two Australian swimmers, who are to visit Neu Zealand this season, to appear in Auckland on March 9 ana March 11, was granted. Gribble) said that his centre wished to emphasise that the visit was originally intended as a visit to Auckland only. However, it had been extended to include Wellington and Auckland If circumstances should permit the swimmers to stay in New Zealand long enough for visits to Wellington and Christchurch, then the Auckland centre would agree. He warned that a longer period than the four davs originally decided on could possibly bring swimmers of a lesser calibre than those wanted
