KITE-FLYING CONTEST

Christchurch Section

Braving the inclement weather 13 boys and girls between the ages of nine and 13 yesterday morning took part in the Christchurch secticu ot a national kite-Hying competition. The competuion winch is being organised by Philips Electrical Industries, was held in north Hagley Park. Mr G. Stepnenson, sales promotion manager of the company, will seiect finalists from 14 centres and a national kiteflying final will be in Wellington during the festival of Wellington week, which will be Held at the end of next month. The company is giving prizes worth £250. Late yesterday afternoon a senior section—for boys and girls aged up to 19 years—was held but only one finalist will be chosen although age will be taken into consideration in choosing the finalist. There were six competitors in the senior section. The strong wind.made kiteflying very hazardous and one boy who had not used a heavy enough string last saw his kite flying away uncontrolled to the west of the park. The most interesting entrant in the junior section was n Indian kite. This kite required no run to become air-borne and its handler was able to make it dive and climb with a minimum of effort. Their was only one box-kite entered and this was in the senior section. The judging of the competition is based on kite construction and its performance in regard to height, stability and duration of flight. The competitor who will represent Christchurch at the national final will be notified by mail some time next week.
