TIMARU MATCH TODAY
Wicket Expected To Be Slow (N.Z. Press Association) TIMARU, January 24. After four inches of rain in the last four days in Timaru it is certain the wicket and outfield will be slow when the M.C.C. starts its two-day match against a South Island combined minor association's eleven at the Timaru Boys’ High School ground tomorrow. Although the weather was clear, if rather uncertain, today, the ground was still holding after a thorough drenching in recent days, and with a slow outfield batsmen may find runs hard to get For this match the M.C.C. has omitted R. M. Prideaux. W. E Russell and R. W. Barber. The Minor Associations’ team Includes eight players who have past or present experience in Plunket Shield cricket. and another. P. A. Sharp (Southland). who played tor New Zealand Colts against the M.C.C. at Ashburton recently. Strong Bowling Attack The combined eleven, captained bv the New Zealand leg-spinner. J C. Alabaster, has a fairly strong attack, with the opening bowling in the hands of the Southland and Otago representative. D J. Vear, and the med-ium-pacer from South Canterbury. H N. Dellow. who had two seasons in the Canterbury Plunket Shield side. Assisting Alabaster tn the spin attack will be another leg-spm-ner D. C. Currie, who represented Central Districts with considerable success and played for Canterbury against Auckland this season, and Sharp, the off-spin-ner from Southland. The combined team does not look so strong In batting, although S. McKnight (Otago). G G Coull (Ashburton), and W Robertson (Southland) form a trio who have won their way into Plunket Shield class.
