CHINESE FAMINE
Refugees At Macao MACAO, January 23. People have been dying daily from starvation in Chinese communes, refugees from the Chinese mainland claimed today. They said there were "many” deaths every day and the commune hospital was always filled with hundreds of people too weak to work because of the food shortage. People in one part of Kwangtung Province had refused to go to work since
January 1 when their rice ration was cut. China recently admitted great agricultural setbacks, said the British United Press. The refugees said that in their areas the rice ration was cut by about one-third from seven ounces each meal. Refugees from the Toumun and Pakchiu Communes in Kwangtung said that to soften the blow the local authorities reduced the working day to 10 hours. Previously it had been 18 hours at Toumun and 16 hours at Pakchiu. During the week-end, dozen* of farmers arrived in Macao, a Portuguese colony.
