DEMOLITION OF SHEDS

Rowing Club’s Old Building

The Canterbury Rowing Club’s old sheds on Fitzgerald avenue are now at an advanced stage of demolition. The sheds were bought by the Christchurch City Council about two years ago, but the club was the successful tenderer for the demolition work. The members are carrying this out themselves at the same tune as they continue with the building of their new shed on Kerr’s Beach. The old sheds, built in 1881, in succession to earlier sheds further along the river, were one of the first buildings in Christchurch north of the Avon in the area where they stand, and are among the oldest buildings still in existence anywhere in the city. They were designed by a noted Christchurch architect of the day. Mr J. J. Collins. The site is being cleared fdr road widening.

The club continued to occupy the sheds from the time of their sale up to only a few months ago, remaining as tenant to the council. The move 1° Kerr’s Reach was made only when the construction of the new shed was sufficiently advanced for its occupation.
