YACHTING Auckland Narrowly Wins Tanner Cup Series

GISBORNE. January 18. Mark Paterson, aged 13, of Auckland, the light-weight of the contest, won the Tanner Cup. the national sevenfooter sailing championship, by 11.43 point's in the five-race series concluded at Gisborne today. Level, two wins all. with Bret de Thier. of Canterbury, at the end of the fourth race, the Auckland boy in the final event gained second place to the Canterbury skipper's sixth. Paterson, of the Kohimarama Club, Auckland, has been sailing for only three years. He has never been in a contest of this type before. He proved his worth in the lighter weather, handling his yacht. Auckland was followed by Canterbury, with Waikato fifth. On the run to the next buoy, Waikato had 35sec on Poverty Bay at the turn. The next leg produced a Startling run by Otago. From tenth position Otago moved right through the field to round the last buoy ssec behind Waikato. Auckland was next, followed by Poverty Bay. Northland, Nelson, and Canterbury. The Otago boat slipped back on the run to the finish. The Auckland boat fought hard to head Waikato off, but the young skipper from Hamilton crossed the line first. Auckland followed closely. Poverty Bay’s run inshore gave it third position over the line, with Otago fourth. WanganuiManawatu was next, with Canterbury sixth. Northland. Bay of Plenty. Hawke's Bay, Wellington, Nelson. Southland, and Taranaki followed.
